Justin Gomez of Humble Bakehouse

On this episode we return to our theme of the Cottage Baker with my guest Justin Gomez. Justin talks about his career journey and early bread influences that encouraged him to pursue baking full time. He explains the family ties and values behind the name Humble Bakehouse and shares his valuable experiences and insights on starting and growing a cottage bakery in his community of Martinez, California.

Are you a ROFCO baker? Check out this awesome and growing resource that Justin has put together to share all our communal knowledge on all things ROFCO.

Justin’s early bread influences and sources of inspiration:

  1. Watching “Josey Builds a Bakery!” (video)

  2. Baking in his Ooni Outdoor Pizza Oven.

  3. Reading Ken Forkish’s book - Flour Water Salt Yeast: The Fundamentals of Artisan Bread and Pizza.

To me, being a community supported baker is cultivating relationships. It’s not localized Instagram adds, it’s not a cool sticker, or you paid a graphic designer this much for your “brand,” it’s really ingraining yourself (pun intended) in your community. All my subscribers get a loaf, home delivered, on their doorstep, one day a week - but I know their stories.
— Justin on the question of marketing his cottage bakery

yabang • Tagalog/Filipino

  • adj. pride, arrogance, proud, snob, boastful, conceited

  • Opposite - HUMBLE

  • Ex. Justin’s mom teaching him a valuable life lesson and keeping humble as a kid saying, “Don’t be yabang!”

Justin started an Instagram page @knowyourbaker to further connect our baking community through photos and stories of the instagram bakers we interact with everyday but not might know that much about on a personal level. Follow along and submit your story!
